Smart Data is a gold nugget, with a shape that belies a much bigger underlying vein of high-context-density value within once-opaque global networks that AI agents could surface.
At Intellyx, we’ve been covering NETSCOUT for a few years, but I’ve never been to their ENGAGE customer summit. I joined a few hundred global customers and a handful of fellow analysts in Dallas, October 6-8, 2026.
CEO and founder Anil Singhal kicked the event off with a NETSCOUT 5.0 vision for expanding their primary markets of network observability, DDoS attack prevention, quantum-safe traffic protection, carrier service provider support, and supporting downstream platform partners like ServiceNow and Splunk.
There were good roundtables and plenty of chances for feedback and discussion, but the version number announcements and presentations were not the big story.
Smart Data for AI-assisted operations
NETSCOUT’s ability to enrich real-time network telemetry with detailed metadata and precise quality-of-service, security, and traffic context produces Smart Data – which powers a class of solutions they call ASI (or adaptive service intelligence). ASI is a live network data asset that AI inference models innately understand how to use and interpret without intermediate treatment.
Since every application estate must live or die on the sustainability and performance of the extended network it runs on, this opens up a new network frontier for context-rich service observability and security data. Traditional application logs and system metrics that feed into AI SOC and AI SRE tools typically require massive data ingestion, data preparation, and model training exercises, for which there are a constellation of token-eating startups and big vendor solutions.
The agentic AI transformation could be rather brief for NETSCOUT and their customers. They just announced a specialized conversational AI in front of their deterministic tools like nGenius network observability, Omnis analytics…
