TidalScale: Combining Multiple Commodity Servers into One Massive Virtual Server

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Traditional hypervisor technology takes individual physical servers and divides them into multiple, smaller virtual machines (VMs), appropriate for tasks that can run on individual VMs or that lend themselves to being distributed across multiple VMs.

Using its ‘inverse hypervisor’ technology, TidalScale does just the opposite: it virtualizes multiple physical, commodity servers as a single, massive virtual server with as much memory and storage capacity as necessary for the task at hand.

Typical use cases for TidalScale include Big Data challenges that are difficult or impossible to break up into parallel processing tasks, and for large and unpredictable workloads, especially in high performance computing scenarios.

Unlike traditional approaches to vertical scalability like supercomputers, TidalScale’s technology allows for flexible scale-up and scale-down, thus combining advantages of both horizontal and vertical scalability for those problems that require such power and flexibility.
