A few weeks ago, a company offered us $5,000 to write a 5,000-word white paper. They wanted us to write it because they liked our work.
We turned them down. Our white papers are less than half that length and cost more than twice as much.
That discrepancy got me wondering: what can they expect to get for that money?
AI impacts the contract writing market
It wasn’t too long ago that $5,000 would buy you 5,000 hand-written words from any number of hungry contract writers.
Today, however, why would such writers crank out a paper by hand, when AI can do it so much faster?
The company looking for the paper understands this new reality, of course. They’d be fools to think that what they’d get for the money would be anything other than AI-written.
Indeed, if Intellyx was in the market of delivering AI-written papers, then we would have no qualms about taking the money. $5,000 is more than enough for the work it would take to assemble the customer requirements into a prompt.
We’re not in that market, however. We have a firm policy of hand-writing all the content we produce – with no AI involvement.
So, why would somebody hire us to write something, given all the AI tools on the market and all the hungry contract writers who are only too happy to use them?
Comparing our writing to AI-driven contract writing
Here is a table that contrasts the writing we do with the AI-written alternative:
| Intellyx’s hand-written content | AI-written content | |
| Original insights | Intellyx produces original thought leadership content that doesn’t appear anywhere else | AI summarizes and consolidates content it finds elsewhere |
| SEO value | AI-based search engines favor original content, so Intellyx writes content that AI-based searches return as authoritative | AI-based search engines rank AI-generated content poorly or exclude it altogether to avoid model collapse |
| Veracity | Intellyx provides analysis rather than factual reporting. We’re selling our insights rather than a summary of facts | AI-generated content is subject to hallucinations |
| Cost | Intellyx charges more than contract writers (even ones who still hand-write content) but less than larger analyst firms | AI-generated content is cheap or even free (but you get what you pay for) |
| What it’s really good for | Original, hand-written thought leadership content drives awareness, brand building, and helps generate demand and can also educate the market on modern technology trends | AI-generated content is good for summarizing existing information on a topic, but doesn’t serve marketing goals very well |
The Intellyx Take
You might think we’re Luddites by the way we shun AI in our writing – but you’d be jumping to the wrong conclusion.
We actually love AI. We simply prefer to use it for tasks it’s good for.
For example, check out our new BrainChat. We’re using AI to summarize and consolidate the thousands of articles we’ve written over the years. Ask it anything!
We also use ChatGPT as a glorified search engine. If you’re looking for summarization and consolidation of available information, it does an amazing job. Try asking it what value Intellyx can provide.
What we won’t do, however, is peddle AI-generated content. Our customers want and deserve better – no matter how good the LLMs get.
