An Intellyx Brain Candy Update from KubeCon NA 2025
DevZero provides a unique Multi-dimensional Pod Autoscaler (or MPA) that dynamically rightsizes live Kubernetes clusters and nodes in order to increase resource utilization and reduce costs while meeting performance objectives.
When I last visited with DevZero at KubeCon 2024 it was almost an entirely different company largely focused on provisioning non-production development environments and improving developer experience metrics. Yes, the bin packing technology was there for reducing container footprints, as well as the LEGO-themed shirts and toys, but other than that, this was one of the sharpest pivots I’ve ever seen.
As it turns out, there’s a lot more readily available savings in balancing ephemeral instances of CPU, GPU, memory and storage resources across an enterprise fleet of clusters, and as much as 60 to 80 percent of a normal enterprise’s capacity is underutilized. By setting simple declarative policies, environment managers can reserve 50% excess resources for fewer critical customer-facing Tier 1 apps, while less frequently used instances never need as much headroom and can get by on cheaper spot instances.
“Policies are the glue that holds it all together. You define the kind of overhead you want for workloads, and the constraints. And then you go through and connect those policies to workloads or node groups,” said Rob Fletcher, co-founder and COO of DevZero. “So, what part of it is new? All of it. We are actually inside the cluster. We install operators into the cluster and are managing production infrastructure.”
