An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief
bitdrift prioritizes mobile device-side telemetry capture. local data processing, and cloud-based correlation to provide a real-time observability view of mobile platforms, applications, and IoT/OT devices, in order to improve customer experience and performance for nodes that may not always have perfect connectivity.
By now, everyone knows it’s a mobile-first world, as 75% of adults in the U.S. are purchasing goods and services through their smartphones – usually in short-lived, momentary sessions. So why treat the observability of the mobile experience like any other web page or system node on the Internet, and expensively feed all data into a cloud-based service?
As a spin-out of the well-known rideshare app Lyft, bitdrift now supports more than a billion devices and apparently processes around a trillion logs a day at the edge, using multiple “fixed size ring buffer memory” that can log and process days of activity on a device at little or no cost, without sampling.
Operators and engineers can then overlay workflows that define when and how to share data with bitdrift’s backend data lake, or their own bucket or cloud compute resources, for investigation, for instance, if latency, performance, or user behaviors are not trending in the right direction. There’s a lot more than a “crash report” to look at here.
Intellyx hot take: We appreciate an understated but useful AI strategy, where engineers are in control and can query real-time and historical data with natural language, review slick graphical reports, or automate escalations through Slack with full stack traces. which is particularly important for sussing out the “long tail” of symptoms that can only appear with specific device / OS / network / app / regional / user behavior combinations.
Intellyx cold take: What you may not know is that much of the logging capacity of our smartphones, and even IoT devices, is woefully underutilized. Since most mobile sessions are momentary, complete log data about each user action, network communication, and phone internal subsystem can be compact enough to store locally.
