An Intellyx Brain Candy Update
Temporal, already an open-source durable execution substrate of cloud native enterprise-grade applications everywhere, now brings their fault-resistant state to prevent failures in complex agentic AI workflows.
Time has flown since our last briefing in 2023 as major companies shuffled for the exits of monolithic scale-up databases, in order to find open ways to achieve predictable transactional integrity and verifiable outcomes for distributed microservices applications, and now, agents.
Of course, agents can display non-deterministic behaviors and semi-autonomous capabilities that make their actions hard to predict. Fortunately, agents are also very objective-oriented, so if they are given guardrails, the right tools and contextual data, Temporal’s persistence won’t let them forget what they are doing, even if there are delays or interruptions in their workflows.
Builders can self-host or use Temporal’s managed cloud option, and bring their own favorite language and agentic platform and use the Temporal SDK to build and assure consistent outcomes across workflows and activities, including state observability, failure recovery and replay.
Intellyx hot take: 2026 has become the year of the agent, with hockey-stick growth adoption, but if we expect agentic AI to handle high-stakes work, then we can’t afford to treat them like black boxes. Durable execution will become one of the table stakes for enterprise-quality agents.
Intellyx cold take: You might think of agents as just another automation step in a process workflow, but getting the results a business expects out of them from a prompt, especially when strung together in multi-agent workflows, is tricky. Agents are still not right for every workflow, but solutions like Temporal in the hands of thoughtful builders can make them more predictable for a growing set of enterprise use cases.
