Since the first Interop in 1988, this venerable networking technology conference has seen its share of innovation. Founded as a TCP/IP interoperability workshop, it gave professionals their first glances of 100 megabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Cloud networking protocol OpenFlow – not to mention an appearance by Mr. T in 2000 that still causes tongues to wag.
This week’s UBM Interop at Javits center in New York, however, was underwhelming. Larger vendors appeared to be phoning in their exhibits, while smaller vendors – with one refreshing exception – had little news beyond the obligatory “next version” announcements to attract attendees’ interest. Even the tchotchkes had a dull sameness to them. Have we reached the end of interesting innovation in networking technology? Or are we simply experiencing a lull before the next storm to hit the industry?
