Cybersecurity Insomnia? BT Assure Cyber May Help You Sleep At Night

At last week’s RSA Conference, BT Security launched Assure Cyber, their new comprehensive cybersecurity offering. BT Security is a division of British Telecommunications Plc (BT), a subsidiary of BT Group.

BT bills Assure Cyber as a security platform, but the word “platform” falls short, as this offering combines a broad suite of security tools, the expertise of a cadre of seasoned security professionals (both at BT and among partners), and ongoing professional and managed services.

“As innovation in technology accelerates, so must innovation and investment in the security controls that protect sensitive corporate assets from cyber-attack,” according to Mark Hughes, president of BT Security. “Helping organizations master that changing cyber threat landscape is at the core of the BT Assure Cyber proposition. It is all about rethinking the risk.”

bunkerRethinking risk, in fact, is an important part of the enterprise security story, as more organizations are waking up to the strategic importance of cybersecurity investments to their bottom line.

Hughes sees this trend in the changing role of the chief information security officer (CISO) at many BT customers. “There’s a new breed of CISO, coming from the IT world instead of the security world,” Hughes says. “These CISOs are better at upside risk.”

Upside risk – the uncertainty inherent in an enterprise’s ability to meet its business targets – is traditionally absent from the purview of the CISO. Instead, the traditional CISO focuses on downside risk – how to mitigate breaches and other adverse events.

Naturally, Assure Cyber focuses on mitigating downside risk as well. This offering includes a suite of tools as part of a continually evolving reference architecture, as well as a “super correlation” engine that identifies anomalies in network traffic.
