2wimage2W: A hot topic lately is microservices. How are these any different from mashups and service-oriented architecture?

JB: Microservices are tiny pieces of code that include bits of the OS, the runtime environment and caching needed to run the code. It’s more than just the Web service of first generation SOA. Microservices are cloud friendly and are well suited for containers. The architecture is an update of first-generation SOA of 10 years ago, but more cloud friendly. People have found that Web services are too heavyweight, and we don’t want middleware driving our architecture. Instead, developers want lightweight, RESTful interfaces as part of a distributed cloud-friendly infrastructure. The overall business benefit is increased agility from having software that’s more flexible. The monolithic applications of the past are extremely inflexible, making it difficult to leverage change for business advantage.
