Semantic Technology: Building The HAL 9000 Computer?

Is Paris Hilton a celebrity socialite or a hotel in France? The answer depends upon the context, perhaps from a Web page, magazine article, or other source. A normal search engine can’t tell the difference – but semantic technology can.

This approach has been more or less on the drawing board for decades now, but if the buzz at this year’s Smart Data Conference is any indication, semantic technology has arrived. Real-word applications are finally providing significant value.

A fascinating combination of innovations, including software, hardware, and underlying theory, have created a perfect storm of progress. We’re not building HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey or the helpful computer from Star Trek yet, but we’re closer than we’ve ever been.

Confluence of Semantic Innovations

Advances in graph databases and cognitive computing, combined with blisteringly fast specialized computer chips and advancements in mathematics and semantic theory, account for an explosion of real-world applications that are driving value across industries as diverse as oil and gas, publishing, and financial services.
