Enterprise information technology has long been the domain of the IT organization, responsible for managing and maintaining complex, heterogeneous applications and supporting infrastructure. Everyone outside IT had to jump through several hoops to get access to those capabilities they needed to do their jobs.
No longer. Digital transformation is shifting the power and responsibility away from traditional IT organizations – to line-of-business employees, partners, and customers. No longer must people be sophisticated, experienced technology professionals to access and leverage the power of modern digital technology.
This democratization of technology is rapidly defining the user experience in companies today. We all have smartphones in our pockets, more powerful than the supercomputers of a generation ago. It’s high time IT understand how to support a distributed workforce with simple, mobile-centric technology that helps everyone from executives to the field workforce get their jobs done.
Examples of Today’s Field Workforce
Today’s field workforce is as diverse as the industries they work for. Typically off-site and often customer-facing, this broad category includes everyone from entry-level retail associates working at malls to experienced industrial electricians plying their craft at factories, industrial or commercial construction sites, or public works facilities.
Some industries depend more heavily on their field workforce than others. For example, most people in the hospitality industry, from waiters to maids to chefs to beverage managers, all work in the field – as the field for a hotel, casino, or cruise ship would consist of the entire facility.
Hospitals are also a familiar type of business where most workers are in the field, from physicians and nurses to equipment techs to maintenance staff.
In the utility and telecom industries, the field workforce is more distinct from the office workers who make up the bulk of their personnel. Nevertheless, these industries’ field workforce is every bit as critical as those in hospitality or healthcare, from high voltage line workers to retail service industry to the personnel in mobile phone stores.
