Five Cybersecurity Dangers To Worry About This Week

Cyberattacks have become so common that they tend to fade from view. But for head-in-the-sand executives who believe they have better ways of spending their time and money, here’s a wake-up call.

eddiebauerThe attacks keep coming. They’re getting more sophisticated. And in spite of all the advancements the cybersecurity technology community is making, the bad guys continue to have the edge.

Here are just a few of the more notable cybersecurity dangers to hit the news in just the last week. Ignore them – and all the others – at your peril.

The MICROS Compromise

Retail point of sale technology vendor MICROS has been part of Oracle since the tech giant acquired it in 2004. MICROS systems have been deployed at over 200,000 food and beverage outlets, 100,000 retail sites, and 30,000 hotels.

All of these establishments are subject to data exfiltration, now that attackers have compromised the MICROS technology, according to Krebs on Security.

Oracle has acknowledged the breach. It has “detected and addressed malicious code in certain legacy MICROS systems,” according to an Oracle spokesperson, and the company is asking all MICROS customers to reset their passwords.

The investigation is still underway, but there is evidence pointing to a well-known Russian cybercrime syndicate as the likely culprit.
