Huawei Reinvigorates Enterprise Cloud with Comprehensive ‘Cloud 2.0’ Strategy

Chinese technology provider Huawei is on a tear, looking to grow its respectable $60 billion revenue number to $150 billion by 2020. Best known as a manufacturer of gear for the telecom industry, Huawei is in large part counting on its enterprise division to generate much of this growth – and the key to that growth is the cloud.

Cloud computing has been with us for about a decade now, so placing such a large bet on its enterprise cloud strategy is risky. Huawei hopes to counter that risk with its deep expertise in multiple industries.

At this week’s Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai, I sat down with Ken Hu, Huawei’s rotating (and current) CEO, to get his take on Huawei’s enterprise story.

Huawei is careful to frame its cloud strategy as the next generation of enterprise cloud computing. “This year we will enter the era of ‘Cloud 2.0.’” according to Hu. “We see a new trend where sectors will change their mindset and take new action.”

This industry-sector specific messaging is central to Huawei’s strategy – leading to what it calls industry clouds. “We will see more industry clouds,” Hu says. “Cloud Era 2.0 means thousands of individual clouds, each with distinctive features.”
