Wavefront: Web-Scale Unified Metrics Monitoring and Visualization

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Wavefront is one of many vendors in the IT Operations Analytics (ITOA) space, a market that has burgeoned over the last few years as vendors leverage big data technologies to provide greater insight into the operational environment in real-time.

wavefront-logoWavefront grew out of the ‘Borgmon’ monitoring technology effort at Google, and the technology found its way into Facebook, Twitter, and other web-scale companies. Wavefront now counts several such web-scale and SaaS companies as customers. Such companies require web-scale monitoring to be sure, but that’s not the whole story.

Rather than monitoring logs or events as most other products do, Wavefront monitors metrics: timestamped statistics over a specified time period. Wavefront built its own time-series database to ensure massive scalability for its unified metric store that supports real-time, ad hoc queries and visualization over massive amounts of metrics data.

Wavefront can also import log and event data and convert them to metrics – and then generate alerts based upon sophisticated queries. But its focus on unified metrics combined with its web-scale architecture empower users to create real-time visualizations over current and historical data with no downsampling.
