Solarflare: Meeting Enterprises’ Need for Speed

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Increasingly, only a few thing define the digital era: a focus on the customer, organizational agility and the need for speed. As customer expectations continually increase and potential market disruption lurks behind every corner, enterprise organizations realize that they need to move fast to survive. That means faster decisions, faster changes in direction, and faster transactions.

Solarflare believes that they can help enterprises rise to this challenge. The company, a longtime networking industry leader providing jitter-free infrastructure with very low latency, has developed a new line of “smart” network interface cards (NICs) for the modern data center server. First and foremost, these NICs, according to the company, deliver some of the highest bandwidth and lowest latency in the industry.

But the company promises more than just faster network throughput. Their smart NICs can also capture, package, index and time-stamp a wide-range of application and network data directly on the NIC — without agents or impacting server resources. The result is that organizations can get access to this important packet-capture functionality and network analytics more quickly and leave system resources available for more important tasks.

In addition, their smart NICs support a wide range of software extensions and what they call fabric-based apps that enable organizations to apply special functionality (such as firewall protection) directly on the NIC and at the point of network connection.
