Turbonomic: Helping Organizations Make Hybrid Cloud a Reality

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

There are few, if any, organizations that are not moving to the cloud in some way. But as they do, they must grapple with the need to manage a mixed environment that spans their on-premises, legacy infrastructure with one or more public clouds. Moreover, as they move toward workload-centricity, they find that resource optimization becomes more complex and harder to manage.

The industry veterans who founded Turbonomic realized that traditional management platforms were failing in the hybrid cloud world because they focused on either the monitoring of the environment (or ‘viewing’ in Turbonomic parlance) or the management of the environment (what it calls ‘doing’), but not both. As the dynamic nature of cloud came to coexist with legacy environments, this ‘view/do’ separation became untenable.

The company designed its hybrid cloud management platform to overcome these challenges and offer enterprise organizations a single, integrated monitoring and management platform for the modern technology stack. Its solution exclusively uses APIs to rapidly and dynamically characterize the relationship between workloads and their underlying architecture, both on-premises and in the cloud.

While visibility is the first step in managing a hybrid cloud environment, it is Turbonomic’s ability to automate management (the ‘do’ part) that makes this a potential game changer. Using what it calls ‘market-driven’ algorithms that assess workloads based on utilization and performance, the company’s solution can suggest and fully automate actions, such as the reallocation of workloads, to sustain and improve performance anywhere within the organization’s environment.
