edgemesh: Peer-to-Peer Caching at the Edge for Dramatic Web Performance

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

The WebRTC specification (short for ‘real-time communication’) allows peer-to-peer communication between browsers. This technology is especially useful for Google Hangouts and other peer-to-peer video applications, as well as file sharing, remote desktop access, and a few other use cases. It is now supported in most modern browsers.

edgemesh has taken WebRTC to a new level, empowering peer-to-peer browser access to any object a browser might place in its cache. Web publishers simply add a snippet of JavaScript to a page, and the edgemesh global infrastructure establishes a peer-to-peer network overlay that connects all browsers as they load pages with the snippet.

The result is dramatically improved performance at the browser interface, as for many requests, the browser simply finds the content it is looking for in a nearby browser. The performance gains thus can exceed even the fastest Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), and in fact, edgemesh complements existing CDNs for optimal performance.
