An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief
The Application Performance Monitoring (APM) sector is a mature market space. A slew of technology vendors has been delivering APM solutions for many years, helping enterprise organizations get a handle on how their applications may be helping or hurting the customer experience. However, the technology used to develop applications has undergone significant change in the last several years leading to more dynamic and ephemeral applications.
Startup Instana believes that the APM market has not kept up with these changing requirements and, in response, has created what they consider a modern APM tool for the modern application stack. The company’s big innovation is the combination of their distinctive hybrid-agent approach and their heavy use of automation and AI to enable organizations to monitor complex and dynamic application environments, such as those built on microservices and containers.
In these dynamic application architectures, traditional approaches to code-instrumentation are not sufficient. The company’s hybrid-agent model installs an OS-layer agent into a container that then deploys and manages what it calls ‘sensors’ into other containers and application instances. This approach enables the company to deliver near-real-time performance updates and notifications even as the application is in a continual state of change.
This hybrid-agent approach is combined with high levels of automation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help IT operations effectively manage an ever-more-complex application environment. The company uses automation for all deployment and configuration activities to ensure that the monitoring environment is always up-to-date. It then applies AI to help the operations team make sense of and enable rapid decisions from the resulting data.
