H2O.ai Promises ‘Driverless AI’ to Help Organizations Harness their Data

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Software is eating the world. Data is the new driver of value. And Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the key drivers of digital transformation. Most enterprise leaders would undoubtedly agree with each of these three statements and that they need to be transforming their organizations accordingly. But when it comes to harnessing their data and turning it into actionable and value-driving insights, these same leaders are running headlong into a significant challenge: there just are not enough data scientists to go around.

H2O.ai wants to help organizations overcome this challenge and close this gap with what it calls its Driverless AI solution. The company provides an open source cognitive platform that works with data in-place and which offers both a flexible interface (allowing development in MapR, Python, etc.) and integration with big data frameworks such as Hadoop and Spark. Moreover, their platform is GPU-enabled, allowing organizations to leverage these specialized processors for increased performance.

The company’s real innovation, however, goes beyond enterprise scalability and performance to help organizations overcome the skills gap by automating the creation and maintenance of machine learning models. For organizations with data scientists on staff, this enables them to be more productive, letting the platform do a lot of the routine work — sort of like a pilot turning on autopilot while in the air. For organizations without a staff of data scientists, however, they can go completely ‘driverless’ and effectively get what the company calls a ‘data scientist in a box.’

As the company sees it, every organization is collecting a lot of data — but they don’t know what to do with it. It believes that with Driverless AI they can feed their data in and let it come up with insights for them. As organizations continue to find their way in this new data-fueled and AI-powered world, it could be a compelling approach.
