The days of massive, vendor-independent enterprise technology conferences like Comdex are long gone. Today, all the action is at the big vendor shows, like Dell Technologies World, IBM Think, CA World, and last week’s VMworld, to name a few.
The large vendors who mount such extravaganzas all have skin in the game in the form of partner ecosystems – an advantage the Comdexes of yore lacked. This year’s VMworld was no different, although the ‘reduce dependence of VMware’ story was almost as prominent on the floor as ‘work with VMware’ was.
Perhaps the most significant trend year over year is the maturation of the vendors exhibiting at VMworld. Big booths signifying big budgets vastly outnumbered the tiny kiosks that innovative, but comparably poor startups favor.
It might be that newer conferences like Linux Foundation’s KubeCon are where the innovative enterprise tech companies congregate these days. If I attend the one in December, I’ll be sure to report back.
However, in spite of this trend, innovation was still evident on the floor at VMworld – it simply took a bit more digging than usual. Here are my highlights.

Intellyx publishes the Agile Digital Transformation Roadmap poster, advises companies on their digital transformation initiatives, and helps vendors communicate their agility stories. As of the time of writing, CA Technologies, IBM, Pivot3, and VMware are Intellyx customers. None of the other organizations mentioned in this article are Intellyx customers.
