Sierra Wireless: An Ambitious Plan to Help Customers Realize IoT-enabled Business Transformation

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

While Sierra Wireless has long held itself to be a pure play Internet-of-Things (IoT) vendor delivering what it calls a complete edge-to-cloud solution, it now hopes to take things a bit further. Up to now, the company has focused on providing the building blocks of an IoT strategy. The company claims to ship over 17 million edge devices, predominately what it calls embedded modules, per year. It provides networking solutions in the form of IoT routers and gateways, and it delivers connectivity and managed cloud services to help customers manage their IoT network.

The company, however, has thus far delivered these components in a somewhat fragmented manner with the customer left to assemble them into a transformative solution. The company now plans to change that with an ambitious goal to be the enabler of its customer’s transformation into what it calls x-as-a-service.

The company’s goal is to help its customers reimagine their traditional business models into new business models that deliver conventional goods as a service (e.g., tires-as-a-service, rather than buying tires, etc.). This transformation, however, demands an in-depth IoT strategy and technical sophistication to manage it in production. The company hopes to help its customers overcome these obstacles by delivering an end-to-end platform that enables them to plug in a device adaptor (or adaptors) on one end and plug the systems that will power their new business model into the platform on the other (via an API). The company believes that enabling this type of end-to-end IoT data orchestration will be critical as organizations seek IoT-enabled business transformation.
