DLT Labs: Making Blockchain as Real As Cobalt

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Toronto-based (but globally distributed) DLT Labs is a hybrid blockchain services and product company. They are heads-down focused on delivering industry-specific solutions, while building a reusable network platform and a library of blockchain protocols for consent, securing and sharing information and value.

With much of their development talent invested in contributing code and tools to the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain ecosystem alongside IBM and others, DLT also creates and validates APIs to enable work and exchange across other platforms including Ethereum, Corda/r3, and Holochain. Refreshingly, they leverage this effort for paid supply chain and government projects, not to mine a particular alt-coin.

In addition to pharma, freight and NGO agency projects, of particular interest is their Mintrax joint venture for ensuring material and ethical provenance of cobalt mines in the Congo, a country that supplies 65% of this critical mineral element in electronic components.

“You need a clear chain of custody for these products, or you pay a huge penalty,” says Loudon Owen, CEO of DLT Labs. “In our view, nothing happens in a supply chain unless someone has the power to require it, someone with the data who can demand adoption.”
