An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief
High Performance Computing (HPC) used to be relevant to only the rarified few organizations that were tackling the thorniest and most resource-intensive challenges. Historically, most enterprise organizations did not fall into this category.
The differentiating power of data and its resulting exponential growth in the enterprise, combined with the rising prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, and their associated workloads, however, are changing this dynamic. As a result, nearly every enterprise today should see itself as a high performance enterprise and begin embracing elements of HPC and so-called hyperscale approaches as they re-envision their technology architectures.
The challenge, of course, is that most enterprise technologies were not built for the HPC and hyperscale world. Technology startup, Quobyte, intends to help fill this gap.
Claiming to be the only software-defined storage solution built on hyperscale principles, the company provides software that enables organizations to create a horizontal storage platform using commodity servers.
The approach allows organizations to mix and match storage mediums and provides linear scaling up to thousands of servers. The company has also put significant focus on enabling fault-tolerance and self-healing at scale, while also reducing administration overhead via a simple, single-pane-of-glass and API-based management interface.
As a software-only solution, the company says that it can run both on-premises as well as in the public cloud. It also supports policy-driven data management, which enables organizations to leverage fine-grained data placement across software-defined storage tiers, isolate applications and data, and optimize workloads.
The company’s goal is to provide the highly scalable storage environments that it believes nearly every organization will need as they become data-driven, high performance enterprises.
