Our briefing with Camunda contained a few contrarian surprises. While I’ve written that the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) spec has been too unwieldy for broad adoption, Camunda unabashedly supports it, enabling workflow designers to create executable BPMN diagrams.
The second surprise: while most business process management (BPM) and workflow automation vendors are moving all-in with low-code as they improve their application-building user interfaces, Camunda eschews such interfaces altogether.
In fact, while it does offer a Modeler and a handful of other developer-facing apps, its core offerings are its workflow and decision engines, which it exposes via APIs. Camunda’s customers primarily leverage these engines in ‘headless’ mode, choosing to hand-code their own user interface apps that access the engines via their APIs.
