We tend to talk about digital disruption solely in terms of how digital native startups have disrupted long-standing industries, but while that is true, it’s also too simplistic. The reality is that new technologies have enabled the evolution of business models giving customers new choices in how they interact and make purchases. Overwhelmingly, customers have voted with their pocketbooks as they have embraced these new, often more flexible and experiential models. One of the stars of this story has been the so-called consumption-based business models in which customers no longer purchase a product or commit to lengthy contracts, but instead pay only for what they use, when they use it.
The demand for these types of consumption-based experiences, in the form of subscriptions and other approaches, has left many enterprises struggling to adapt both their business models and their underlying technology stack to respond. It’s also raised the stakes on customer satisfaction and engagement as organizations move from what was often a multi-year touchpoint cycle to effectively having to resell their solution each month. In most cases, the legacy systems sitting at the core of these long-standing business processes are ill-equipped for these new consumption-based business models.
