Rancher: Kubernetes-as-a-Service You Can Deploy Anywhere

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Rancher offers a preconfigured, multitenant Kubernetes distribution that companies can deploy in any cloud, on-premises, or at the edge.

Rancher adds multi-cluster management to the core Kubernetes codebase, providing role-based access control, lifecycle management, backups, and more. This management tier will run on any Kubernetes distro, not just Rancher’s.

Rancher has also created a lightweight Kubernetes version for edge computing by removing deprecated features and unnecessary modules to reduce its footprint.

The company also offers a version of Kubernetes it bundles with Linux for a bootable version of Kubernetes that runs on bare metal (as well as in any VM).

Rancher’s newest offering (yet to be released): a ‘microPaaS’ running on Kubernetes that includes various modules to provide a small-footprint alternative to the Red Hat OpenShift PaaS offering.
