Alluxio: Data Orchestration Platform with in-Memory Remote Processing

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

Since we last covered Alluxio in September 2018, it has fine tuned its message to align with the exploding cloud-native computing movement.

Cloud-native computing requires a comprehensive ‘data fabric’ that abstracts the physical location of data, enabling analytics and other queries to run at speed regardless of the physical location of data.

Easier said than done. Large data sets have the data gravity problem, where latency and other limitations make it impractical to move such sets, especially between on-prem and the cloud over the Internet.

There are also regulatory issues like data sovereignty that introduce arbitrary constraints on the location of data.

Alluxio offers a data orchestration platform that provides a high-performance data fabric that addresses these issues. Its secret: it only moves those data that require processing, and then performs that processing in memory.

With Alluxio, organizations can move their data close to their compute in an efficient, performant manner. And since Alluxio doesn’t store data where they’re processed, it sidesteps the data sovereignty issue as well.
