Chronosphere: Cloud-Native Monitoring at Web Scale

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

The leading open source monitoring, metrics, and alerting tool for Kubernetes is Prometheus. However, even though Prometheus has achieved a broad level of adoption, its development team never intended for it to handle Kubernetes deployments running at Web scale.

Following the common pattern among Web scale companies, Uber found it had to create its own monitoring and metrics technology, which it spun out as the open source product M3. M3 integrates with Prometheus, but also offers cluster management, built-in replication, customizable consistency, arbitrary time precision, and other features necessary to handle monitoring and metrics at massive scale.

Founded by ex-Uberites, Chronosphere is driving the development of M3 and bringing it to market. The vendor is also adding enterprise-class features to its commercial version of M3, including a cloud-based SaaS offering of M3 with additional governance and resource management capabilities important to enterprise customers.
