Pensando: Purpose-Built Silicon for Cloud-Native Computing

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

The specialized performance requirements of AI have driven remarkable innovation in computer chip technology. With Pensando, the same thing is happening with cloud-native computing.

At the center of the cloud-native infrastructure movement is Kubernetes, which orchestrates containers and microservices in order to support massive scalability and resilience. This dynamic ephemerality of running software necessarily puts a burden on the underlying processing infrastructure.

Pensando addresses these cloud-native computing challenges with a custom ASIC platform that the company has optimized for handling security, programmability, and edge-based services, which represent many of the most processor-intensive aspects of cloud-native infrastructure.

For its enterprise customers, Pensando offers a controller running on Kubernetes that provides a comprehensive management abstraction across all servers that have the Pensando PCI card installed. Public cloud providers, in contrast, simply purchase the cards and build their own controller software.

The combination of the controller and the hardware enables Pensando to provide software-defined security, networking, and storage services that run many times faster (with lower latency and jitter) than corresponding services running on typical server platforms.
