Cato Networks: Converging SD-WAN and Network Security via Cloud-Native Principles

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Cato Networks brings together software-defined networking (SDN) principles and a range of network security functionality into a single offering. It then offers these combined capabilities via a global private network that has dozens of points of presence around the world, with many more to come.

Gartner refers to this convergence of network and security functionality as Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) – although Cato Networks has been delivering such functionality to its enterprise clients long before Gartner coined the term.

Cato extends its policy-based SDN approach with a broad range of cloud-native principles, including elasticity, adaptability, delivery via an as-a-Service model, and self-healing and self-maintenance. It also takes an identity-driven zero-trust approach to security that also falls under the cloud-native umbrella.

In addition to these cloud-native characteristics, Cato’s next-generation SD-WAN functionality helps enterprises replace now-obsolete MPLS links with Cato’s global private network backbone that can span edge endpoints as well as edge-to-cloud routes.
