Cumulus Networks: Bringing Linux-Based Open Networking to Nvidia

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

The big news for Cumulus Networks since we last covered them in May 2019 is their pending acquisition by GPU leader Nvidia.

Cumulus offers a version of Linux with in-kernel networking capabilities sufficient to provide a single operational network fabric across enterprise data centers and campuses.

The idea of a campus hearkens to the day when physical wired networks connected various office locations at a particular geography. Today, Cumulus also supports virtual campuses consisting of geographically distributed nodes, including global office or retail locations.

Nvidia’s acquisition of Cumulus complements its 2019 purchase of Mellanox, a data center chip and systems vendor.

While Mellanox hardware works with a diversity of software, Cumulus’s open networking Linux distribution works with a variety of networking hardware. The combination provides comprehensive support for wired networking across data centers and physical as well as virtual campuses.
