Postman: A launchpad for API-driven development

Postman logoAn Intellyx BrainCandy Brief

Postman is well-known for inventing an essential API testing tool, with millions of developers downloading their open source utility, and productively requesting and validating responses every day. Still, many users of Postman have yet to consider Postman — the company behind the tool — and its SaaS-based API collaboration platform.

Rather than replacing commonly used repositories, communication, project management, build/deploy tools and other SaaS multi-app platforms (like Salesforce, Jira, etc.), Postman offers a shared API hub that acts as ‘one source of truth’ between all of them, for synchronizing the many disparate APIs an extended application environment may utilize.

The testing functionality is still there, and so are useful mechanisms for mocking API instances, documentation and standardizing an organization’s use of thousands of available APIs from other gateways or services. But the primary value of a multi-tenant API hub lies in allowing developers, testers, service users and partners to share a workspace to produce, leverage and support the best-known authorized versions of each API for the functionality businesses need.

API governance is a moving target that is hard enough to achieve across multiple service providers, and dozens of dev/test/delivery platforms, but perhaps Postman is positioned to move that package along post haste.
