Replicated provides a software packaging and installation product that automates pre-flight checks, delivers software into meticulously tuned containers that run anywhere Kubernetes can go, and eases post-install vendor support concerns.
Their concept of “modern on-prem” encompasses the need for commercially viable applications to be consistently packaged with full environment manifests and licenses, easily installed on user laptops, behind firewalls, in datacenters, across VPCs or in public clouds, and then supported with updates and services.
Thankfully, we don’t get a shrinkwrapped COTS box full of install disks with a pallet of IT manuals anymore. If you step back from today’s DevOps cycle and our distributed computing environments, and look at it all from the fulfillment perspective of a software vendor or open source project, the end customer of the resulting enterprise software still requires application-driven operations (or ‘AppOps?’).
Even in a multi-tenant SaaS and cloud-first world, there will always remain a need to install most application packages in a secure way that respects the hybrid IT network configuration requirements and entitlements of the consuming organization.
It just so happens, Kubernetes can provide just such a capacity for ubiquity, and Replicated takes advantage of it to deliver their KOTS (Kubernetes off the shelf) product to allow software providers to wrap up and fulfill containerized orders in any-prem. They also provide Level 2 and 3 technical support services for their installations.
Replicated must be solving a hard problem, if the deep technical talent benches of ISVs and open-core vendors like UIPath, Tripwire, Hashicorp and Puppet are willing to lean on them to optimize this last-mile fulfillment process for demos and commercial applications, rather than devise and manage their own installers.
