An Intellyx Brain Candy Update
PlanetScale contributed to and commercialized the open-source Vitess database, one of the popular (and earliest, in cloud-native terms) options available for maintaining state in fast-scaling, stateless realms.
Since our last coverage of PlanetScale in 2020, the firm has now repositioned to offer developers a completely serverless version to de-complexify deployment, management and regional concerns.
“Our own infrastructure is still built on one of the largest Kubernetes clusters, but for developers that has now become an implementation detail,” said Jiten Vaidya, CEO and co-founder, PlanetScale.
Developers can use a CLI or automation to call on their serverless Vitess offering to cue up deployment requests in git, and safely make changes to dev branches of the database, which are validated against schema conflicts and indexed automatically before having any impact on the production instance.
The company offers a free project tier, and companies can pay for expanded usage in terms of serverless queries and data ingress. The ‘hypersharding’ and creation of multiple production-like instances for dev and pre-production use are still there.
