Redpanda: Like Apache Kafka only Better in Every Way

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

The open-source Apache Kafka event streaming platform has established itself as the predominant streaming middleware offering for enterprises.

Yet, while its adoption is undeniable, Kafka is also getting long in the tooth. It has scalability issues, it is difficult to configure, and because the Kafka team built the product on the JVM, it has all the JVM’s performance limitations.

Redpanda replaces Kafka with an event streaming platform that resolves all of Kafka’s challenges. The Redpanda team built the product with C++ for blisteringly fast performance with no need for a JVM.

While Kafka requires Zookeeper for state management, Redpanda deploys as a single binary that doesn’t require additional packages or libraries to function. It also provides Prometheus metrics that feed any modern observability tool.

Redpanda supports Kafka APIs, making the switch from Kafka to Redpanda dead simple. It provides API access to both real-time and historical data – useful in particular for machine learning use cases. It can even run on ARM processors to support burgeoning edge computing applications.

Redpanda has licensed its technology under a Business Source Available license, and runs as-a-service, in the customer’s virtual private cloud, or on-premises with proper hardware support.
