Fermyon: A new spin on speedy WASM app delivery

Fermyon is expanding on its WebAssembly delivery platform and cloud deployment service with Spin 2.0, an open source polyglot developer tool that allows code in several popular languages (Rust, JS, Java, etc.) to be compiled as ultra-fast and secure runtime binaries that can launch and shut down almost instantaneously at compute endpoints.

In our first briefing with this well-heeled startup in 2022, some of this capability was already ‘under the hood’ of its low latency cloud offering, sort of like a fast, serverless Heroku for WASM apps to run in.

A lot of development work has gone in since then on optimizing core compute on GPU architectures, multitenancy, secure libraries and separating application instances—but it’s the new WASM component model that takes the cake here, as these lean runtime-assembled apps “just work” on OpenShift, Docker, any K8s distribution, AWS, NGINX, even Raspberry Pi.
