Fermyon: Leveraging WebAssembly for its Low-Latency, Cloud Native Serverless Platform

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Fermyon offers a platform and development tools for building serverless-style capabilities leveraging WebAssembly for ultra-low latency provisioning and service-to-service interactions.

WebAssembly is a language-independent execution model that serves as a compilation target for the Web. Originally conceived as a JVM-style execution environment for browsers, Fermyon extends the technology to its cloud native platform.

While containers may take a few minutes to spin up and serverless functions like those running on Amazon Lambda may take a few seconds, Fermyon has lowered this spin up time to less than a millisecond.

As a result, modern cloud native workflows built on the Fermyon platform run closer to real-time than existing technologies can manage.

The technology also improves resource utilization over both cloud and container-based applications, especially when applications or microservices must spin up and down rapidly.
