Since modern cloud native applications are largely defined as containerized services communicating through APIs, we’ve seen a proliferation of free and open-core tools for design, testing, deployment and monitoring of APIs, which has brought the need for self-service platform engineering capabilities to the forefront.
Ambassador’s Telepresence offering gives developers a virtual K8s cluster on their local machine, with service mocking and throwaway APIs for test publishing without impact on production clusters. Their Edge Stack offering includes an API gateway with permissioning and K8s ingress control, service discovery and mapping of pre-prod and production environments, as well as testing and observability features.
What’s key here is that enterprises can bring their own heterogeneous mix of utilities, telemetry, and repositories, then take on tools they are missing, and get it coordinated within an API lifecycle that flows like an iterative DevOps software development lifecycle.
