Intertrust: Digital Rights Management for Media, IoT, and Web3

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Digital Rights Management (DRM) has been around since the VHS video days as a way of enforcing who can access some piece of digital content and how they can use it. DRM became especially important when downloadable audio became a reality – followed by streaming audio and now streaming video.

Intertrust offers PKI-based DRM for securing media assets as well as interactions among diverse devices.

In addition to media and entertainment, the company’s technology has found traction for IoT in the energy industry, for example, securing access to remote charging stations, solar and wind power facilities, and digital thermostats.

The company even has a play in the controversial Web3 marketplace, where companies are building businesses leveraging blockchain and smart contracts to support decentralized business models.

Web3 has suffered under the burden of illegal and dishonest participants. With the security that DRM from Intertrust offers, however, at least there’s a chance for legal, above-board Web3 business models to succeed.
