CloudFrame: Adding Deep Legacy Codebase Understanding to Mainframe Code Modernization Offering

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

When we last covered CloudFrame in June 2023, the company offered COBOL-to-Java transformation that delivered well-architected cloud native code that would run on the mainframe’s less expensive zIIP processor.

Now, the company has added Atlas, an AI-powered legacy codebase understanding tool that leverages a knowledge graph to give engineers insights into the business purpose of legacy code, as well as its structure, dependencies, and other characteristics necessary to reduce the risks inherent in mainframe application modernization.

Atlas’s knowledge graph gleans information across the entire codebase as well as associated metadata and documentation. From this information, it delivers a semantic understanding of the context of the code at scale.

Atlas leverages AI in three ways: machine learning for pattern recognition at the heart of the knowledge graph, LLM-based generative AI for providing natural language prompts and formatting output documentation (including prioritized backlogs, test scopes, and dependency-aware cutover plans), and agentic AI for coordinating deterministic and generative AI behavior.

With CloudFrame, engineers can lower the risk of complex mainframe application modernization, accelerate modernization timeframes, and reduce costs – while yielding cloud native Java that will run on the mainframe or in the cloud.
