Edge computing refers to practices and technologies for pushing workloads — including applications, processing power and data away from centralized corporate data centers, as well as major hosting or cloud providers, to highly localized ‘edge’ servers, mobile devices, or other networkable devices, including IoT (Internet of Things).
So for instance, a retailer might push a local copy of its central point-of-sale and customer application into a container, running on a local edge router in the store, which communicates with the branch’s local terminals. The edge computing resource may sync up with the central office or other Internet services on varying time intervals.
