Cream Of The Cloud + DevOps + IoT Crop

Attending any conference billed as a cloud, devops, and internet of things (IoT) confab is sure to dominate in the buzzword bingo department, and this week’s Cloud Expo/DevOps Summit/IoT Bootcamp by Sys-Con didn’t disappoint.

cloudexpoSys-Con events are known for two things: being blatant vendor-fests and a desperate lack of drinking water. This event lived up to its reputation on both counts, as vendor speakers scrambled for the scarce Dasani as they breathlessly laid out their cloud or devops or IoT value propositions to a diverse, largely enterprise-centric audience.

Said audience, accustomed to the sales pitch atmosphere of Sys-Con events, found value in vendor stories nevertheless. Vendor-heavy events are a great place to shop for enterprise tech, after all, as innovative contenders with solid value propositions naturally rise to the top, while the weaker product stories languish at the bottom.

Bottom of the Barrel

Struggling in the depths: network gear bellwether Cisco Systems. Consulting Services VP Manjula Talreja tried to make sense out of Cisco’s muddled “Internet of Everything” message, to no avail. The end result was a creepy mishmash of IoT gadgets and older gear like Wi-Fi hotspots that lacked a clear unifying vision or value proposition.

Two especially creepy examples: wearables for retail banking or gesture recognition for retail. Do we really want our Fitbits to report our exercise regimens to our insurance company, or our supermarkets to watch our every move – literally?

This plethora of cutting-edge gadgetry might impress some techies in the room, but I don’t think businesses will be pulling out their checkbooks any time soon.
