The universal serial bus on PCs and (until recently) Macs is standardized so that pretty much any device can connect to it. Charles Araujo, principal analyst for Intellyx and founder of the Institute
for Digital Transformation, says that businesses should invest in creating their own “business bus” that will make them similarly agile enough to connect to any digital ecosystem.
One way to do this is by leveraging existing APIs, which let other companies build on top of your software framework. Often, they profit from this (a good example is ride-sharing services, which were built on mapping APIs). But when they do so, it brings the company providing the API closer to becoming an ecosystem driver. APIs can also provide a cheaper and quicker way to offer a software solution.
