Zebra Technologies: IoT for Football and Beyond

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Zebra Technologies is leveraging its years of experience building barcode scanners, mobile printers, and other handheld devices to craft specialized Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and associated infrastructure for the NFL.

It offers nickel-sized sensors that go into players’ shoulder pads, enabling receivers in each NFL stadium to track each player’s movements on the field in real-time.

Fans have seen Zebra’s technology in action when a network shows a replay that includes the path a player takes on the field. Behind the scenes, teams use the technology to collect vast quantities of data on player movements, both during games as well as practice.

Zebra’s latest innovation: a sensor that goes inside the football. This sensor includes an accelerometer, allowing teams to monitor the force and direction of throws, kicks, and other aspects of ball movement.

Zebra also sells its IoT technology in manufacturing, healthcare, and other verticals, but the company is most excited about prospects in additional field sports like rugby and soccer.
