The twin disruptive forces of cloud computing and digital transformation are disrupting the cloud provider marketplace. Unrelenting demand from mid-market and enterprise customers alike for faster, more adaptable services that will help them deal with the pressures of digital disruption are now table stakes for any cloud provider to remain competitive in today’s turbulent business environment.
Simultaneously, cloud providers have been under increased competitive pressure from the likes of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, as enterprise customers get increasingly comfortable with public cloud offerings. The result is that cloud providers must be continually adapting as they strive to maintain their competitive differentiation in a cloud-first world.
Cloud Providers have responded through the aggressive deployment of compute and storage virtualization as they modernize their data centers. Within these increasingly state-of-the-art facilities, cloud providers are able to deploy virtual machines and software-defined storage in minutes and automate operational processes while offering high degrees of workload mobility.
But there remains an Achilles heel: the network.
