Chaos Sumo: ‘Smart’ Object Storage for AWS S3

An Intellyx Brain Candy Brief

Since Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 is an object store, it has limited native ability to support data discovery and analysis. In addition, when an organization has large numbers of objects in S3, it’s easy to lose track of them – a situation that can lead to redundancy, inconsistency, and the embarrassing exposure of confidential information.

Chaos Sumo resolves these issues with an intelligent discovery, management, and analytics service that resides directly in S3. This service provides an API-based abstraction layer on top of S3 objects, enabling a range of data-related operations, including queries across multiple object types, cataloging and searching of objects, and the identification of the public vs. private status of each object.

Chaos Sumo reduces the ‘scaffolding’ necessary to build data lakes, data warehouses, and data pipelines on top of S3, because the vendor’s Smart Object Storage essentially provides a virtual data lake across S3-based data.

Similar to data virtualization, Chaos Sumo customers need not move their data – the difference being that there are S3 objects under the covers rather than traditional data stores.
