Lightstep: Microservices APM for a Distributed Computing Future

On one hand, Lightstep is a well-funded new Silicon Valley-based APM (Application Performance Management) startup that seems to be just emerging out of stealth mode.

On the other, they have already have quite a few high-velocity brand-name customers who are using their [x]PM solution to mind the store for the specific types of distributed cloud and container-based applications becoming prevalent these days.

Monitoring and profiling application performance in this world is no longer a matter of instrumenting UIs or installing an agent in a specific infrastructure stack. The UI is displaying services ‘on the fly’ and the back-ends supplying business logic could literally be running anywhere, from monoliths to microservices in hybrid clouds.

LightStep introduces an up-front sampling approach they claim can analyze 100 percent of the transactions wherever calls are made between services, tracing each transaction time, while providing a business service level view where the consumer context of all that performance data is collected and profiled.
