SmartBear is seeking to provide a central hub for API quality and design consistency, by bringing together API definition, documentation, test automation, virtualization, deployment and monitoring under its newly unified ReadyAPI Platform.
If software is eating the world, APIs are becoming the universal service-based menus from which users and systems order the software functionality they consume. As APIs proliferate in numbers globally through enterprise IT shops and software vendors, the need for continuous testing and a centralized point of reference for API implementations as they touch multiple teams has gained its own life outside of the standard software delivery lifecycle.
DevOps and QA teams are already familiar with SmartBear through its support of popular open source devtest projects and specifications (Swagger/OpenAPI, Cucumber, SoapUI) and commercial products (TestComplete, Zephyr) the firm now encompasses.
By putting functional, performance and security API test suites alongside design specs and virtualized test implementations, enterprises can seek to industrialize and safely scale out API delivery, whatever the underlying interfaces and infrastructures. Their ReadyAPI Platform integrates to source code and object repositories (GitHub, Bitbucket, etc.) and well-known CI/CD pipeline and automation tools (CircleCI, Jenkins, Ansible, etc.).
