SUSE: Shifting its Center of Gravity to Cloud-Native and the Edge

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

We last covered Linux vendor SUSE in December 2018 and Kubernetes management provider Rancher in May 2019. SUSE completed its acquisition of Rancher in December 2020.

Post-acquisition, SUSE continues its emphasis on Linux, expanding its line of purpose-built versions of the venerable open source operating system.

That being said, the excitement at SUSE focuses on cloud-native computing its acquisition of Rancher brought to the table.

In addition to Kubernetes management, SUSE continues to support the Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) for enterprise deployments, Longhorn block storage, and K3s, SUSE’s open source lightweight Kubernetes distribution for edge computing scenarios.

While SUSE Linux and its Rancher offerings provide substantial value to customers today, its longer-term strategy is clearly focused on the edge, as the company brings together custom Linux distributions with K3s and the rest of the Rancher products.
