Couchbase: Taking on Incumbent RDBMS’s with a JSON-Based Document Database

An Intellyx Brain Candy Update

When we last wrote about Couchbase in March 2017, the story was its battle with MongoDB for the JSON-based document database market.

The vendor is still battling Mongo to be sure. However, it recently added SQL support, enabling it to take on competitors in the relational database management systems (RDBMS) market as well as maintaining its leadership position among NoSQL vendors.

Couchbase leverages the fact that JSON offers many of the benefits of traditional relational schemas, in addition to bringing more flexibility and the power of JavaScript to the table as well.

Adding SQL support to its JSON-based database enables Couchbase to support mission-critical transactional workloads, as well as distributed, memory first, and of course, JSON-centric use cases.

Couchbase also offers a ‘light’ version of its database for edge devices – a move that positions it well for the rise of the cloud-empowered edge.
